Pages & Grapes Events / Private Parties Policy

Alcohol & Tastings Policy (Michigan SDM + Beer & Wine Tasting)

At Pages & Grapes, we love creating a warm, bookish space for gatherings.

Because we operate under a Michigan SDM (Specially Designated Merchant) license with a Beer & Wine Tasting permit, we’re able to offer carryout beer and wine and limited tasting samples—with a few important rules we’re required to follow.

What We Can Offer (Per Michigan Rules)

Carryout Sales (Beer & Wine):
You are welcome to purchase beer and wine from us to take home during store hours (and during scheduled events).

Tastings / Samples:
At select events, we may offer complimentary tasting samples under Michigan’s tasting rules.

These tastings are intended for sampling and are limited by law, including:

  • Tasting samples are complimentary (not sold by the glass)

  • Sample size limits apply (e.g., beer and wine sample pours are limited)

  • A limit on the number of samples per guest applies during a 24-hour period

If a tasting is part of your event, we’ll clearly communicate the tasting details in advance.

Important Compliance Notice (No On-Premises Consumption)

Pages & Grapes does not hold an on-premises (by-the-glass) license.
Because of this, and per Michigan liquor laws and MLCC rules, we must enforce the following:

No Open Containers Permitted

  • No consumption of beer or wine is permitted on our premises (including during private parties, during store hours, or after hours), except for lawful tasting samples served as part of an approved tasting activity.

  • No “wine by the glass,” “beer service,” “open bar,” or bottle service is available at this time.

  • No BYOB (bring-your-own beer/wine) is permitted.

  • Beer and wine purchased from Pages & Grapes must remain sealed and is intended for off-premises consumption.

If We See Open Containers

To stay compliant, our team may ask that open containers be:

  • Closed and removed, or

  • The service/activity be stopped immediately

We appreciate your understanding—these policies protect our licensing and our ability to keep offering tastings and carryout options.

Event Planning Tip

Many groups choose one of these formats:

  • Book club or party + tasting samples (where offered), and guests take home bottles/cans

  • Shopping-focused private events with curated book picks and “take-home” beverage bundles

If you’d like help building an event package that fits your guest count and theme (bridal shower, birthday, girls’ night, book club), we’re happy to suggest options that stay within Michigan rules.
